Egypt: D8 between empty promises and geopolitical tensions

Cairo has transformed itself into a hub of regional diplomacy with the recent summit of the D8, a group of eight developing countries, hosted by Egypt. This annual gathering has brought together influential figures from states such as Turkey, Indonesia, Pakistan and others who, like modern gladiators, compete in the ring of economic and geopolitical stakes. But what is really going on behind this great diplomatic circus?

Regional tensions: a renewed game of chess

The strained relations between some member states, notably between Egypt and its neighbor Turkey, are in the spotlight. Geopolitical disputes, exacerbated by competing interests over crucial issues such as security and natural resources, paint a bleak picture. Leaders in Cairo spoke candidly of the need for constructive dialogue, but it is clear that the climate is often fraught with rancor and unresolved disagreements.

Economy, development and pretense

In truth, this summit is also an opportunity to sell golden promises. Talking about economic cooperation, sustainable development and regional integration in countries that, for some, are struggling to meet the needs of their citizens, seems almost comical. Discussions on the creation of a free trade area, for example, are full of good intentions but often refuse to materialize. Such a drift leaves populations hungry, both economically and socially.

An uncertain future for the D8

The major challenge on the horizon is the sustainability and effectiveness of the D8. As key members continue to bicker, the spectre of a sterile grouping looms. Whether it is armed conflict, economic crises or political instability, the D8 can be as effective as a boat pierced by hand-held bullets. For Egypt, the success of this summit is also a matter of national pride, but it must be followed by tangible results.

In this chaotic context, the next steps will be decisive. The leaders' fiery speeches may seduce the crowds, but it might be time to translate these words into concrete actions. Egypt, by its status and ambitions, must be at the forefront of a D8 that does not remain just a nice idea, but that could really transform into an influential player on the international scene. The ball is in their court, but for how much longer?
