G20: Empty promises in the face of global hunger
At a time when plates are increasingly empty and poverty is regaining its colours, the G20 is trying to harmonise its agreements to combat these scourges that are eating away at our planet. A global alliance that is jarring, tainted by promises and empty echoes, like a fanfare sounding at a funeral. What irony! In a world where poverty is the guest of honour, the G20 is draping itself in noble intentions.
A Facade of Fighting Hunger
The G20, this assembly of powerful people, now claims to take the bull by the horns to put an end to the hunger that is raging in the world. But behind this mask of philanthropy, it is legitimate to wonder if these leaders are really equal to poverty or if they are content with a soothing speech. The promises of dazzling donations, the impassioned speeches and the declarations of good intentions may well be illusionary, but the reality of inequalities remains burning.
French President Emmanuel Macron hits the mark by denouncing the indifference of rich nations to the prevailing poverty. Who would have believed it? The man who struts across the golden cobblestones of the Élysée Palace improvises as an apostle of the eradication of hunger. A beautiful scene worthy of a Dickens novel: image-conscious nobles throwing crumbs to the poor. It remains to be seen whether these crumbs will turn into a real feast or whether they will be nothing more than seasoning for a cold soup of unfulfilled promises.
The Mechanisms of the World Union
On paper, the mechanisms of this global alliance seem well-oiled. The G20 has decided to act through the financing of agricultural projects and social programs, promising to turn the tide. But it is always easier to promise than to act. It is a bit like offering a compass to a shipwrecked person without providing him with a boat. Indeed, many countries are already suffering catastrophic effects of climate change, and adaptation or development projects often come up against a cruel lack of real financing.
Let's not forget the role of multinationals in this picture. Can agribusiness groups really be the main players in this fight? By setting foot in the Amazon forests, buying up valuable land and exploiting the resources of the poorest, these giants are in reality predators, nibbling away at the promised land of the populations. So, we must ask ourselves the question: instead of lifting countries out of the doldrums, do these alliances end up reinforcing the chains of dependency?
A Reality Too Heavy to Bear
Ultimately, the question that haunts our minds is whether this virginity of the G20 discourse will translate into concrete results on the ground. Will their fine words hold up in the face of the sordid reality that millions of people face every day? Evoking famine and poverty when some countries seem to be enriching themselves at the expense of others seems like a tragic farce. What if international solidarity were, after all, simply a fashionable slogan?
It is time to demand tangible commitments, actions driven not by commercial interests but by a real desire to make a difference. One thing is certain: the fight against poverty, hunger and inequality will require real political will and not declarations of intent that evaporate as quickly as the morning dew.
