Niger: Protests against French interference and arrest of a suspected spy
The Nigerien capital, Niamey, has been the scene of massive protests denouncing alleged French interference, following the arrest of an individual suspected of spying for France.
Massive demonstrations in Niamey
On November 17, 2024, thousands of Nigeriens took to the streets of Niamey in response to a call from several civil society organizations. These demonstrations aimed to denounce what are perceived as destabilization attempts orchestrated by France. The demonstrators, brandishing placards and chanting anti-French slogans, expressed their unwavering support for the military authorities in place, affirming their determination to preserve Niger's sovereignty in the face of foreign interference.
Suspected spy arrested
Tensions between Niger and France have been heightened by the recent arrest of a French national in Niamey. The individual is suspected of being an agent of the General Directorate for External Security (DGSE), the French intelligence service, operating under a false identity. The arrest has reinforced Niamey’s accusations of interference against Paris, illustrating the growing tensions between France and countries in the Sahel region.
Tense geopolitical context
Since the military coup of July 26, 2023, relations between Niger and France have deteriorated. The new Nigerien authorities have repeatedly accused France of destabilization attempts, accusations that Paris has categorically rejected. In response, France began withdrawing its troops from Niger, marking the end of more than ten years of French military presence in the Sahel.
