DRC-Uganda: a military alliance strengthened against the ADF
The Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) have reaffirmed their commitment to continue their cooperation with the Ugandan army (UPDF) to fight the rebels of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF). This collaboration, strengthened since 2021, has already made it possible to carry out effective operations against these terrorist groups operating in the provinces of North Kivu and Ituri. Recent discussions between the two armies, held in Fort Portal, Uganda, in early October 2024, resulted in the decision to extend these joint actions, with the aim of definitively neutralizing the ADF.
Tangible results, but persistent challenges
Operations conducted so far have made it possible to recapture several strongholds controlled by the ADF and reduce their capacity to cause harm. Important leaders of the group have been captured or eliminated, particularly in the Rwenzori and RN4 areas. However, despite these military successes, the ADF is trying to withdraw to new areas, such as the Asefu River sector in Ituri and the Lubero territory in North Kivu.
An essential partnership for regional peace
The FARDC-UPDF cooperation goes beyond simple military operations. It reflects a shared desire to restore security in the African Great Lakes, a region regularly destabilized by armed groups. For both countries, eradicating the ADF is essential to bring lasting peace to these areas ravaged by violence for several decades.
