DRC: Tshisekedi, the courageous voice who denounces Rwandan interference despite international silence
Before the United Nations General Assembly, Félix Tshisekedi did not mince his words. In a speech marked by determination, he reaffirmed what many in the region have long whispered: Rwanda’s active involvement in the resurgence of the M23 rebel group, which continues to destabilize eastern DRC. According to the Congolese president, this interference is nothing less than a flagrant violation of national sovereignty, with dramatic human consequences. Nearly 7 million Congolese are now displaced because of the violence tearing this strategic region apart.
Tshisekedi did not just denounce, he called for action. Arguing for targeted sanctions against Kigali, he urged the international community to finally recognize the gravity of the situation and intervene to prevent an even greater humanitarian disaster.
What sets Tshisekedi apart is his resilience in the face of Rwanda’s stubborn denial and the embarrassed silence of some major powers. At every opportunity, whether during diplomatic visits or at global forums, he continues to demand justice for his people. Washington’s support, notably through Antony Blinken, who acknowledged evidence of Rwandan involvement, gives him new momentum. Yet international sanctions remain weak and insufficient.
By repeating his accusations this week, Tshisekedi is showing that he will not bow to pressure. He knows that the eastern DRC, rich in natural resources, has long been a target, but he is also aware that the economic and geopolitical interests of certain powers are holding back concrete actions against Kigali. For Tshisekedi, this battle is not only territorial, it is a question of national dignity and the protection of the Congolese.
