Democratic Republic of Congo: Félix Tshisekedi focuses on culture and sport to improve the country's image.
For several months, Félix Tshisekedi seems to be working hard to restore the image of his country, the Democratic Republic of Congo, on the international stage. But there is no question of settling for traditional diplomacy, which is far too boring for this man who has decided to tackle regional issues with less conventional weapons. The Congolese president is banking on culture and sport to assert his "soft power" and compete with a neighbor, Kigali, which has managed to transform its image into a true model of success. And while some might call him an idealist, it is clear that his strategy could well bear fruit.
Music as a weapon of seduction
At the heart of Tshisekedi’s ambitions is music, a vehicle for unity and celebration in a country where the trombone is as popular as political debate. Diversifying his approach, he turns to renowned Congolese artists, seeking to engage them in projects that transcend borders. Music becomes a diplomatic instrument, a way to draw attention to the DRC’s cultural riches while reinforcing national pride. Who would have thought that a danceable rhythm could bring crowds together and provoke waves of empathy internationally?
Sport, a real playground
But music is unlikely to be enough. Felix Tshisekedi knows that sports are another area where the country can shine. By focusing on major sporting events and supporting local athletes, he hopes to make the DRC a key player on the African stage. Imagine a major football tournament or an athletics competition in Kinshasa, which attracts the attention of the whole world! By highlighting athletes as role models, he creates national heroes and gives young Congolese people reasons to dream. It is a masterstroke that would hit the region’s competitors where it hurts, using the passion that sports exerts to unite and unite.
A challenge facing Kigali
It remains to be seen how Tshisekedi will be able to compete with Rwanda's burgeoning reputation. Kigali and its President Kagame have built an impressive image, juggling economic development and innovation. The DRC, rich in resources but beset by multiple challenges, must establish itself as a competitor. By playing on its cultural and sporting assets, Tshisekedi could transform this rivalry into beneficial cooperation. But will he succeed in bringing together actors from the public, private and associative sectors around this vision? That is the challenge that awaits him.
It should not be forgotten that behind these ambitions, the reality on the ground remains complex. Internal issues, security concerns and the question of corruption will certainly interfere in the implementation of these beautiful ideas. But in the meantime, the show promises to be captivating. Tshisekedi is on the move, and even if the path promises to be strewn with pitfalls, it is better to watch him dance to the rhythm of his own soft power than to stand by and watch Kigali rise.
