Egypt: a key player in the Gaza-Israel crisis
As the war between Israel and Hamas continues to wreak havoc, Egypt is positioning itself as a key player on the diplomatic chessboard. Faced with an influx of refugees fleeing the violence in Gaza, the gateway to the Arab world cannot remain a spectator. While the climate is tense and tensions are palpable, Cairo seems determined to mobilize the international community to put an end to this destructive conflict.
Cairo gets moving
The Egyptian strategy is clear: to put forward a discourse of peace while keeping a watchful eye on the ground. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has launched an appeal for international solidarity, inviting Western powers and countries in the region to play an active role in resolving this crisis. The aim is to obtain a humanitarian truce and facilitate the entry of aid into the Gaza Strip, which is suffering from an alarming shortage of medical and food resources.
Complex geopolitical issues
Egypt’s influence in this conflict is not limited to a simple humanitarian posture. The situation in Gaza is intimately linked to regional geopolitical issues. With Hamas, considered by some as a terrorist group and by others as a resistance movement, Egypt plays a precarious balance between the need to support the Palestinians and that of maintaining diplomatic relations with Israel. This duality for Cairo is all the more delicate because it could have repercussions on its own national security.
An international response expected
Egypt also hopes that its call will attract a global response that could include concrete steps to foster lasting peace. The question is: are international powers prepared to change their agenda and devote the resources needed to satisfy the quest for stability in the Levant? Time is running out, and the patience of nations, often sorely tested in conflict, may well be frayed even further.
Faced with this situation, Egypt's mobilization could well mark a turning point in the dynamics of the region. While cries of distress echo in Gaza, Cairo must act, otherwise the neighborhood will sink into chaos.
