Comoros: elections under tension, opposition absent and persistent uncertainties.
The elections in the Comoros are being prepared in a climate of palpable tensions and uncertainties. While the legislative and presidential elections are looming on the horizon, the obvious absence of the opposition on the electoral scene raises fears of a large victory for the power in place. A situation that raises more than one question: between strategic abandonment and orchestrated maneuvers, what is really happening on the archipelago?
The opposition desert: strategy or abandonment?
The Comorian political scene is now populated by figures that could almost be described as ghosts. The opposition, which was multicultural and noisy yesterday, seems to have chosen silence in the face of a regime that does not hesitate to use controversial methods to maintain its hold. Several parties have decided to boycott the upcoming elections, aligning themselves with the position of certain leaders who denounce a biased electoral process. Was this electoral "desert" inevitable? Or is it a well-oiled strategy to avoid disappointment?
The priority of priorities: legitimacy or pretense?
In this climate of lack of competition, the government finds itself in a golden position. With a bare political landscape, the chances of a crushing victory seem assured. However, by giving the impression of a legitimacy won on a platter, does the regime not risk getting bogged down in pretense? A vote without opposition risks rekindling tensions, transforming the electoral celebration into a soulless process, worthy of a film that we never want to see in movie theaters. However, one question nags: what is the value of a government that is not challenged?
Election Eve: the people would appreciate it!
As Comorians prepare to vote in an environment devoid of real competition, a reflection is necessary: a true democratic process is not limited to checking boxes on a ballot paper. Citizens deserve much more than a bland spectacle orchestrated by the powers that be. More diversity, more choice, and above all, a renewal of ideas and actors! For the moment, the road still seems long before reaching this democratic ideal. Can the Comoros open their eyes to a reality that is too often glossed over? The answer, as always, lies in the sound of the ballot boxes, which, let us hope, will not be reduced to a mere formality.
