Senegal: Macky Sall, from the Élysée to the climate challenges of the African Union.

After leaving the Élysée Palace in Dakar, Macky Sall seems to have found a new calling. It is not a political post, but a much more prestigious role, namely that of special advisor to the African Union. Yes, the same man who promised to fight corruption and improve governance in his country will now lecture an entire continent. Curious, isn’t it?

The return of Macky Sall: man of peace or pact?

Indeed, Macky Sall has been appointed to chair the new African Union Commission on Climate Change, a daunting challenge that seems perfectly suited to someone who has navigated the troubled waters of Senegalese politics. But what an irony! The country still faces environmental problems, such as coastal erosion and climate change. Isn’t that a bit like handing over control of a bakery to a man who has never eaten bread? In any case, his supporters hope he will show vision and leadership, but that remains to be seen.

The challenges of a former president: towards a new chapter?

That being said, one cannot help but wonder about the motivations behind this appointment. Macky Sall, barely out of office, finds himself propelled to a position that could work miracles in terms of international visibility for Africa. Has he just been offered a second chance to shine on the world stage or is this rather an opportunity to restore his image? Last month, he had already spoken on climate issues at international events. Is he doing this out of conviction or to fulfill a political agenda? The debate remains open.

The busy career of a controversial man

If we take a look at Macky Sall's career, it is difficult to remain indifferent. Former Senegalese head of state, he was praised for certain reforms while being criticized for his autocratic excesses. Between broken promises and suspicions of corruption, his legacy is anything but simple. But it seems that the African Union has decided to ignore these criticisms in the hope of seeing a leader emerge who looks like a savior for the continent.

It will be interesting to see how this new adventure will influence his former compatriots. Will he become a champion of sustainable development or just another politician looking for his place in the global sun? One thing is for sure, the Senegalese and the rest of the continent will keep a close eye on his evolution. Because after all, who knows? Maybe by dint of navigating the political river, one ends up knowing where to find the right currents. Or else, one just ends up marking time.
