Ghana: John Dramani Mahama unveils cabinet tailored for recovery

John Dramani Mahama, recently re-elected President of Ghana, has named his new cabinet, a strategic and ambitious team to address the country's economic, social and political challenges.

Mahama returns to the top

After eight years out of power, John Dramani Mahama returns to the presidency with a clear vision and ambitious promises. Re-elected with 56% of the vote, he has pledged to restore Ghana's economic stability, strengthen the fight against corruption and rebuild citizens' trust in institutions.

In his first weeks, Mahama has laid the foundations for his action by unveiling a balanced cabinet, mixing experienced figures and new faces. This team will be at the heart of the reforms that he promises to lead to give the country new momentum.

Key figures in the new government

Among the key appointments, Cassiel Ato Forson stands out as the new Minister of Finance. A chartered accountant and former parliamentary leader, he inherits the heavy task of stabilizing the cedi, the national currency, and controlling galloping inflation. Forson has already outlined the broad outlines of his strategy: strict budget management and negotiations with international partners to alleviate the debt.

Energy, a strategic sector, is being handed over to John Abdulai Jinapor , former deputy minister of energy. His mission will be to modernize the energy network, encourage investment in renewable energy and ensure a constant supply to support industrialization.

At the Ministry of Justice, Dominic Akuritinga Ayine , a renowned lawyer, takes charge. This position is strategic in a context where Mahama wants to strengthen the rule of law and eradicate corruption, a scourge that has been eating away at the economy for decades.

The anti-corruption component will be directly led by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwah , who is responsible for coordinating a team dedicated to recovering embezzled public funds. The latter has promised concrete actions and rigorous investigations from the first weeks of his mandate.

The challenges: economic recovery and digital transformation

The new government takes office in a tense economic climate. The debt crisis, combined with record inflation, has left many Ghanaian families in dire straits. Mahama has promised to revive the economy through structural reforms, infrastructure investment and a modernization of the tax system.

At the same time, the president wants to accelerate Ghana's digital transformation. Projects initiated by his predecessor, such as the digitalization of public services, will be continued and expanded. Digital technology is seen as a crucial lever for attracting foreign investors and stimulating growth.

Mahama faces the expectations of the people

While Mahama’s appointments demonstrate his ambition to effectively meet the expectations of Ghanaians, the challenges remain immense. The success of his cabinet will be judged on its ability to deliver concrete results in priority areas: fighting corruption, creating jobs, improving purchasing power and stabilizing macroeconomics.

The first months of this mandate will be decisive in establishing a climate of confidence and demonstrating that Mahama's return to power is synonymous with change.
